PEDS Review

Overall, I feel PEDS is a quality product that effectively meets the users’ needs and requirements. The functionality of PEDS is unsurpassed based on the research and testing I have performed on PEDS and other products. The application places an abundance of player analysis tools at your fingertips, but remains simplistic enough that anyone could easily navigate through PEDS without difficulty.

I did a tremendous amount of research and analysis preparing for last year’s draft without the aid of PEDS. After testing PEDS over the last month or so I wish I had access to it before and during last year’s draft. Not only would I not have had to carry around copies of cheat sheets I had prepared, but as acting league commissioner I could have had a much less stressful draft day.

As a league player, I find PEDS particularly beneficial in the following ways:

  • Projected statistics are provided for analysis on all offensive players. While these are not etched in stone, it does at least provide a good foundation which can be tweeked to my desires. An easily overlooked, but extremely useful utility when setting projected stats are the team comparison numbers. How many times have you projected a quarterback to throw 25 TD’s, but didn’t look to make sure that the other players on the same team can account for all 25 TD’s. This type of inconsistency can lead to inaccurate player ratings, but PEDS takes care of this issue with the click of a button.
  • I participate in multiple leagues with differing scoring systems. Without PEDS it was necessary to perform a separate analysis for each league. This would take countless hours to complete, but with PEDS the same analysis can be performed in a matter of minutes.
  • The ability to print reports showing players’ 3-year history along with the projected stats makes it easy to notice performance trends which could lead to the recognition of both sleepers and busts.
  • At the draft, all the pressure is off because you feel confident knowing that you are better prepared than anybody else in the room. You’ve been able to project player stats and scoring, and then rank players based on projected scoring and an adjusted scale. Time to have fun and impress the other players.
  • The ability to quickly check your bye week status at each draft position is certainly much easier than trying determine needs or problems on the fly. So many league players complete a draft only to realize all their draftees at one position have the same bye week. No longer a problem.
  • The recommended picks feature is by far the most unique and beneficial feature in PEDS. I could go on and on about the benefits of this feature so let me just suffice it to say that this is a MUST HAVE once you’ve seen it work it’s magic.
  • The additional ease of mind and free time between picks enables me to pay closer attention to the other teams’ picks and recognize possible draft strategies being used. As a result, I could realize that a player rated high may drop in the draft a little or someone I thought might drop some won’t.

As a commissioner, I find PEDS particularly beneficial in the following ways:

  • I can easily track all teams’ picks during the draft. No more posterboards to prepare and then names to write or labels to stick up. The importance of this is quickly realized if you are both a player and the draft chairman. Trying to do both will not only give you a migraine headache, but cause you to leave the draft asking yourself how you could have overlooked that player or why you picked this player.
  • The built in timer makes it easy to keep the draft moving along.
  • Team rosters can be printed out immediately following the conclusion of the draft so that neither myself or the other players have to write down all the other team rosters.
  • Projected standings can be printed out to stir conversation among players after the draft as to who has the best team.

In summary, PEDS provides an effective method of performing meaningful and essential player projections and analysis without requiring the user to deal with the complexities involved in performing such an analysis. In other words, it handles all the time consuming, repetitive tasks involved in performing player analysis and producing useful results. This allows the user to concentrate on player projections. After all, the output or any analysis is directly proportionate to the accuracy of the data being used as input.

Post-Season Update: I thought I'd give you an update on how things went this past season after using PEDS for the first time. Needless to say, PEDS performed as advertised. I'm not sure how I ever got along without it as a commissioner or player.

I participated in two fantasy leagues this past season, and "PEDS Power" (as I've started to call it) helped me acquire the top scoring team in both leagues. While I'd like to report that I was League Champ on both occasions, it didn't happen; however, I did win one and finish second in the other. Neither of these leagues is a keeper league so we go through a full draft. My second place finish was in the where I am also the commissioner. PEDS made draft day a breeze, just as promised. Of course I did take some ribbing from the guys about bringing technology to the draft.

In addition to these leagues I decided to try my hand at the CNN/SI SportSim Full Contact contest as well. I don't know if you're familiar with this contest or not, but it was free and I figured it was another opportunity to put PEDS to the test. The draft rules are a little odd so I was interested to see how PEDS would do. I'd only confuse you trying to explain the draft rules in detail so I won't try. I'll just say that it's a blind draft where you pre-rank the players at each position. Once again, "PEDS Power" to the rescue. I believe there were approximately 80,000 players in this national contest, and with the aid of PEDS I vaulted to the top of the leaderboard somewhere around week 7 and was the overall leader for seven straight weeks. Two bad coaching decisions on my part in weeks 14 and 15 dropped me down to 18th where I wound up finishing the season. Not exactly first, but 18th out of 80,000 works for me. I can definitely say that without using PEDS I would have never been able to finish so high in the standings. I just wish the program would have been there to keep me from making those two bonehead coaching decisions.

I believe my results this past year after using PEDS for the first time add some credibility to my review. I wrote that review after extensively testing the product, and I believed that those were the benefits gained by using the application, but after actually using it this past year, I'm convinced that those benefits I spoke of are real and tangible. You don't have to believe me, my results speak for themselves.
